Waste Management Project
Waste Disposal System Sera Jhe Health Care Committee´s green workers conduct door to door collection of garbage and clean the entire monastic community surroundings every morning. Earlier, when the population of the monastery was 2000, some hostels were built in the middle of the large monastic area. A corner of that area was chosen for dumping wastes. With the increase in number of monks and the expansion of hostels, the monastery compound has now reached beyond the dumping area. Another worrying factor is that the waste disposal site is attached to the monastic school play ground.
New temples and hostels are built close to the area. Many more are coming up in the future. Taking into account the health and environmental hazards that we are facing now and the ones that we might face in the future, the Sera Jhe Health Care Committee had several rounds of meetings. Looking into the ground reality and advices from environmentalists, the committee had decided to shift the waste disposal area about 1.5 kms away from the monastic compound. This project consists of spaces to store recycle-able wastes and an area where the non recycle-able wastes will be buried in landfills. The new project has been finalized with guidance and advice from the Representative´s office, trained resource persons and other legal advisors in waste disposal system and environmental care. An area of 2.5 acres of land was earmarked for the project.
